RCC Slab Casting in Ahmedabad: Common Site Practices and Where Quality Fails

RCC slab casting is the structural backbone of any building project. Done right, it determines the long-term durability of the structure. Done carelessly — as happens frequently on Gujarat construction sites — it becomes a hidden liability that surfaces years later as cracks, seepage, and premature structural fatigue.

The Standard Site Practice in Ahmedabad Today

On most residential and commercial projects across Ahmedabad and Vadodara, RCC slab casting follows a broadly similar pattern:

  • Shuttering is erected using conventional timber or MS plates

  • Reinforcement bars are placed, often by eyeballing spacing rather than following approved structural drawings

  • Ready-mix concrete (RMC) is ordered from local batching plants — typically M20 or M25 grade

  • Concrete is poured and vibrated using needle vibrators

  • Curing is done with water for 7 to 14 days

At a surface level, this looks like a reasonable process. The problem lies in the gaps between steps — places where shortcuts accumulate and quality erodes quietly.

Where Quality Slips: The Five Critical Failure Points

1. Inadequate Cover to Reinforcement

Cover blocks — the small concrete spacers that maintain the required distance between rebar and the slab bottom — are routinely ignored or undersized on Gujarat sites. The correct cover for a residential slab is 20mm; in practice it is often inconsistent. This allows moisture to reach the rebar, leading to corrosion and spalling within 10 to 15 years.

2. Poor Compaction During Pouring

Needle vibrators are used, but their application is rushed. Vibration duration per insertion point should be 15 to 30 seconds; on most sites it is 5 to 8 seconds. This leaves entrapped air voids in the concrete matrix — reducing compressive strength and creating pathways for water ingress.

3. Water-Cement Ratio Variations

RMC arrives at the designed mix, but site supervisors frequently add water at the point of pour to improve workability. Even a marginal increase in the water-cement ratio (from 0.45 to 0.55) can reduce compressive strength by 15 to 20 percent. This happens because no one is testing slump on-site before placement.

4. Premature Shuttering Removal

IS 456 specifies that formwork for slabs must remain for at least 14 days under normal weather conditions. On fast-paced Ahmedabad sites, it is common to strip shuttering at 7 to 10 days to recycle material for the next floor. Early stripping under partial curing can cause surface deflections, especially in spans above 4 metres.

5. Curing Neglect

Adequate curing is the most cost-effective quality measure in concrete construction — and the most neglected. Water curing requires consistent moisture for a minimum of 14 days. On active sites, curing often stops at 7 days, or is done inconsistently by a single labourer assigned to multiple tasks. The result: surface shrinkage cracks that look cosmetic but compromise the slab's impermeability over time.

The Better Approach: A Systematic Quality Framework

Getting RCC slab casting right does not require expensive technology. It requires a disciplined process applied consistently across every pour.

Pre-pour checks:

  • Verify rebar placement against approved structural drawings — spacing, diameter, and laps

  • Confirm cover blocks are correctly placed and of the right thickness

  • Inspect shuttering for gaps, propping adequacy, and level

During casting:

  • Conduct slump test on every RMC truck load before allowing discharge

  • Log truck numbers, arrival times, and grade confirmation

  • Assign dedicated vibrator operators — one per 15-metre zone — with clear instructions on insertion spacing (400 to 500mm) and duration

Post-pour:

  • Mark shuttering removal dates on a site calendar and enforce them

  • Assign curing responsibility to a named person with a daily sign-off

  • Conduct rebound hammer tests at 28 days to verify design strength has been achieved

Documentation:

  • Maintain a concrete register for every pour: date, volume, grade, RMC plant, slump, and weather conditions

  • Take photographic evidence of reinforcement placement before every pour

Why This Matters for Gujarat Building Stock

Gujarat's climate — hot summers, monsoon humidity, and alkaline groundwater in many areas — is particularly aggressive toward concrete structures. A slab built with poor cover and inadequate curing in Ahmedabad faces corrosion and carbonation pressures that a similar slab in a temperate climate might withstand more easily.
